GIEDRAITIS
Giedraitis, Lithuanian noble family, whose origin is not definitely known. The locality
Giedraiciai (Gedereythe) named in
historical home of the family. This supposition is based on information from the early
15th century, which mentions that Giedraitis princes disputed with the bishop of Vilnius
about the ownership of Aisetas lake located about 50 km Northeast of Giedraiciai. From the
16th century the family branched out widely, dividing into princes and nobles. In almost 5
centuries descendants of this family have included over 50 noted persons, who were more
prominent in ecclesiastical work than in civil or military service. Among them were three
bishops, two generals, and a great many prelates, pastors and monks.
